We are looking for a dynamic and highly motivated individual with significant knowledge and experience with molecular testing to provide technical expertise and daily supervision for laboratory staff. The Senior Technologist works in close collaboration with the Laboratory Manager, Laboratory Head, and Molecular Genetics Associate Laboratory Heads.


1. Provide daily laboratory supervision with respect to:

· technical guidance

· trouble-shooting

· research and development activities

· preparation/monitoring of schedules re: appropriate staffing levels as required

2. Maintain policy and procedure manuals in accordance with licensing and IQMH Accreditation standards

3. Monitor quality control and quality assurance activities:

· ensure appropriate and timely testing

· introduce/evaluate new reagents, equipment and procedures and coordinate subsequent training

· analyze data to suggest corrective actions as necessary

4. Provide laboratory bench coverage and/or case-checking as required

5. Summarize, interpret and evaluate laboratory statistics, including workload unit data

6. Participate in in-service education

7. Organize orientation and training for new staff and trainees

8. Participate in recruitment, selection, retention and performance appraisal of staff, as required

9. Maintain and monitor an inventory control system

10. Promote an effective working environment with emphasis on professional ethics, effective communication, and team participation

11. Monitor and enforce established safety regulations in collaboration with the laboratory safety officer(s)

12. Participate in the ongoing quality improvement initiatives including review and follow-up of nonconformance/incident reports

13. Participate in other tasks/projects as required

14. Draft and/or review policies/procedures for Genetics Lab-related issues


§ Police Record Check (PRC) (Essential)

§ CMLTO Licensed Technologist, with a designation in molecular genetics or clinical genetics (Essential)

§ Masters level preparation in a related field of study (Preferred)

§ Ability to perform, at a high level, technical responsibilities of a genetics (specialty) technologist (Essential)

§ Minimum of five (5) years of experience in an accredited laboratory (Preferred)

§ Some form of relevant supervisory experience (Preferred)

§ Good knowledge of IQMH Accreditation requirements (Preferred)

§ Ability to maintain accurate records, organise workload and establish priorities (Essential)

§ Effective oral and written presentation and communication (Essential)

§ Ability to exercise good judgement and flexibility (Essential)

§ Ability to meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure (Essential)

§ Demonstrated interest in personal professional development (Essential)

§ Working knowledge of computers and software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint (Essential)

§ Bilingualism (Preferred)
