CHEO Managing Three Cases of C. Difficile
OTTAWA – The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) is currently managing three cases of Clostridium difficile (C. difficile).
CHEO is working closely with Ottawa Public Health and taking all the necessary steps to stop further spread of this infection. Guidelines and best practices from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care have been and are being closely followed.

Of the patients with C. difficile, one came to the hospital having acquired it in the community, and two acquired it in hospital.   All three are isolated in private rooms in 4-North and visitor restrictions are in effect for the entire unit.
Additional housekeeping resources have been added to the unit to increase cleaning of rooms, common areas and equipment with appropriate hospital grade disinfectants.
Staff, physicians and families are being extra vigilant with hand washing and use of gowns and gloves with infected patients.
“CHEO is committed to doing everything possible to stop the spread of this infection and to provide the best possible care for all our patients,” said Dr. Carrol Pitters, Chief of Staff, CHEO.
