Referral to Wee Start / Getting Started Services

Questions and answers following your child’s referral to the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre (OCTC)

What are the services that will be offered to my child once I'm referred to the Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre?

Once you have been referred to OCTC and all intake documentation has been completed and received, your child will be referred to our Wee Start or Getting Started Services.

What is the Wee Start Services?

The Wee Start Services is a service for children up to 21 months. During the visits, you will have the opportunity to discuss your child's development as well as to learn strategies and activities to build your child's skills with the support of various professionals from OCTC.

What is the Getting Started Services?

The Getting Started Services is a service that is offered to families of children from 22 months up to 6 years of age. These services give you the opportunity to discuss your child's developmental needs, as well as to learn strategies and play activities to build their child's skills with the support of various professionals from OCTC.

Where are the Wee Start / Getting Started Services?

Wee Start Services: is currently offered at our main site in Ottawa, at 395 Smyth Rd, at the Cornwall site, at 600 Campbell St. and in the Prescott Russell region, at a Rockland Site, at 860 Carron St.

Getting Started Services:

For Ottawa residents, the Getting Started Services are offered at our main site in Ottawa, at 395 Smyth Rd.

For Prescott Russell residents, the Getting Started Services are offered in collaboration with Valoris and the Children's Rehabilitation program from the Hawkesbury General Hospital (HGH) at a Rockland site, at 860 Carron St.

For Kanata, Lanark, Leeds and Grenville residents, the Getting Started Services are offered at our Kanata site, at 2 MacNeil Court.

For Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry residents, the Getting Started Services are offered in collaboration with the S D&G Developmental Services at our Cornwall site, at 600 Campbell St.

For Renfrew residents, the Getting Started Services are offered in collaboration with Renfrew Developmental Services at our Renfrew site, at 499 Raglan St. N.

Who will my child see during the Wee Start Services visit?

At the Wee Start clinic, the parent(s) and child are scheduled to meet with one or more of the following professionals: an Early Childhood Consultant, a Physiotherapist, a Speech-Language Pathologist and an Occupational Therapist.

Who will my child see during the Getting Started Services visit?

At the Getting Started Services, the parent(s) and child are scheduled to meet with one or more of the following professionals: an Early Childhood Consultant, a Speech-Language Pathologist, an Occupational Therapist and a Social Worker.

What will these clinics provide my child/family?

The clinicians involved will be screening your child's developmental needs and they will provide recommendations to enhance your child's skills. The visits at Getting Started Services and Wee Start Services do not include any formal assessment.

What is the process after the Wee Start / Getting Started Services?

Following the initial visit, families may be invited to participate in further consultation sessions / groups or training. If needed, a visit with a Behaviour Consultant and/or a Dietician may be offered. Social Work Services are also available to families as needed. Your child will also be referred to other services based on their needs.
